ERODE: The Tamilaga Vivasayeegal Sangam has organised Erode district hartal on March 29 to register its protest against the Cauvery tribunal verdict. The association said the tribunal had recommended that 6 tmc feet of water from the Bhavani River and 3 tmc feet of water from the Amaravathy River should be given to Kerala. This would affect irrigation and water supply in Coimbatore and Erode districts. Further, they also opposed the attitude of the Kerala Government over for the formation of Salem Railway Division.
The association leaders said that 160 associations of Erode district had supported the hartal and would participate in the protest. All the shops and business establishments, including hotels, would remain closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Buses, autorickshaws, mini buses and share autos will not ply as drivers will participate in the strike, they said.
It was stated that water supply and milk distribution would be maintained as usual. The Lorry Owners Association, Textile Screen Printers Association and others have decided to participate in the strike by closing their business on Thursday.
