THENI: Department of Handlooms has plans to sell cotton textiles and other dress materials worth Rs.20 lakh this Pongal season. It had sold cotton and silk items worth Rs.30.09 lakh during the same season last year, said Collector P. Muthuveeran.
Inaugurating a handloom expo held at Vasantha Mahal here Tuesday, he said 30 per cent rebate would be given to both cotton and silk items.
Madurai Kodambakkam saris, Kundrathur lungis, bed sheets, bedspreads, pillow covers made in Chennimalai, silk saris from Kanchipuram, silk dhotis from Salem, cotton saris from Coimbatore and other cotton textile items were on display in the exhibition. He appealed to public to buy cotton items to provide jobs to handloom weavers.
The expo will ramain open till January 12, 2010.
