An elementary school built of fibre glass sheets at Thavakadu, near Muhutharayar Chathiram on the Danushkodi road, suffered damage following gusty winds on Friday night.

The Mandapam Panchayat Union Elementary school, which was built in 2008, was a novelty in the area as it was built using fibre glass sheets to beat corrosion in the seashore area.

Following gusty winds on Friday night, sheets, covering the side portion of the school flew off and the damage was noticed on Saturday morning, an education officer said.

The school was built to cater to the children of fishermen in the coastal Muhuntharayar Chathiram and nearby areas. Presently, about 35 children were studying in the school, the official said.

A government engineer visited the school and steps have been taken to repair it.

Till then, a temporary shed would be put up and classes would continue from Monday, the official added.
