THANJAVUR: Guru Puja to Appar Swamigal, one of the nayanmars, was performed at Appar Madam at Kalimedu near here to mark the Chithirai Sadhaya Vizha on Saturday.

Aaarthi was performed to the flower decorated portrait and idol of Appar swamigal and annadhanam was given to hundreds of people.

People of the entire village of Kalimedu participated in the festival. Kalimedu Appar Pravaiyinar has been training the youth in singing of Devaram hymns for many years now.

The youth take out bhajans during the Tamil month of Margazhi in the village. Kumara Gurupara Swamigal of Siravai Adheenam Gowmarar Madam, Coimbatore, and T.Selvam, chairman of Thanjavur Marketing Committee, participated in the Guru puja celebrations.

Competitons were also held for school students in singing the Devaram hymns.

Religious discourses were delivered by K.Apparasan of Kalimedu, Azha.Muthu Palaniappan, former Assistant Commissioners, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, and M.K.Prabakara Murthy, Kundrathur, Chennai. A procession with the portrait of Appar swamigal was taken out in the night.

Similarly, Guru puja was performed for Appar swamigal at Appar Madalayam at Thennankudi. Aarthi was performed to the Appar swamigal and annadhanam was given. Mouna Kumarasamy Thambiran swamigal of Dharumapuram Adheenam participated in the Guru puja.

K.P. Nallasivam, Assistant Professor, Philosophy department, Tamil University, delivered a lecture on "Thirunavukarasarum Thondu Neriyum." A procession with the portrait of Appar swamigal was taken out. Fireworks marked the occasion. Folk dance programmes were performed by troupes from South Zone Cultural Centre.
