A gun shot that went off on the premises of the Kolanjiappar Government Arts College at Vriddhachalam, which is also serving as one of the three counting centres in Cuddalore district, caused a flutter on Monday night.

Sub-Inspector of Police Satish Kumar, attached to the Tamil Nadu Special Police and posted at the second tier security, had in his possession a 9 mm loaded pistol. On completion of his shift he retired to the barrack located on the same campus and while he was about to remove the weapon from its cover he accidentally pressed the trigger, resulting in firing a single shot. Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis told The Hindu that an FIR had been filed and departmental action initiated against the SI.
