SALEM: Elected representatives should extend their full cooperation to the officials in implementing development works under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam, Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the scheme in Thathapuram village in Edapadi block near here on Wednesday. The Minister said the scheme was aimed at making all the villages self-reliant. In Salem district, 83 villages were selected for implementation of the scheme in the first phase. Each panchayat would be given Rs. 20 lakh for carrying out a number of infrastructure development works. The scheme would be implemented in all the 385 panchayats in a phased manner in five years.

The district administration had planned to undertake 44 development works in Thathapuram and 77 in Vembaneri under the scheme.

Later, he distributed revolving fund and loans worth Rs. 86.50 lakh to 164 self-help groups (SHG) in the block. Rs. 1.20 crore development work

The Namakkal district administration has allotted Rs. 1.20 crore for taking up development works under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam to six village panchayats at Elachipalayam block.

Inaugurating the scheme in the block in Thondampatti village here on Wednesday, Deputy Speaker of the Assembly V.P. Duraisamy said that the State Government had selected 66 panchayats for implementing the scheme initially. It would be extended to all the panchayats in a phased manner in the next five years.

Listing out the schemes implemented by the Government, he said that the price of the rice supplied under the public distribution system was brought down to Rs. 2 a kg, crop loans worth about Rs. 7,000 crore were waived, the old age pension increased to Rs. 400 and two eggs were being provided under the noon-meal scheme. Presiding over the function, Collector G. Sundaramurthi said that works such as construction of concrete paths, installation of sodium vapour lamps, laying of pipelines for drinking water supply, building of reading rooms and creation of basic amenities in crematorium grounds.
