ERODE: The district has reached yet another milestone in industrial development. It has a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), and it is official. The Union Government on April 23 this year notified as SEZ the 263.19 acres in the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) estate in Perundurai.

The SEZ that falls in the northern and north-eastern part of the 2,600 acre estate will house units manufacturing automobile and engineering components. The SIPCOT estate management in Perundurai has sent proposals to its head office in Chennai, to develop the land.

The proposals are for fencing the land, constructing customs office, providing roads, and power connections for street lights and water supply. Once the proposal comes through, the estate management will begin work. And, only after the works are over will the lands be divided into plots and priced, sources say.

The plan is for dividing the land into plots of five, three, two and one acres. Though the fencing work is yet to commence and plots are to be developed, enquiries have already started pouring in.

Sources in the estate say a well-known industry has visited twice and is interested in starting a plant to manufacture parts of a hydraulic jack. A structural engineering company has also made enquiries, the sources further say and add that there have been not less than 20 enquiries, and about 10 of them have been from industries in Coimbatore.

As and when the SEZ takes shape it is expected to boost the economies of the town and district.

M.P.A. Mahalingam, secretary, SIPCOT industries’ association, says once industries in SEZ start production, they will outsource components, which will help small and medium units. “A number of ancillary units will spring up, providing more employment opportunities.”

N. Shanmugam, CEO of Diesel Machine Works, says the SEZ will result in more computer numerically controlled lathe machine units in the district. At present, DMW is the only CNC lathe in the district. He adds it will also help the construction industry, as housing and other services have to be provided.
