ERODE: S. Shanmugam, who recently won the Grassroots Level Young Innovator Award from former President Abdul Kalam, has secured a B.Tech seat, thanks to the Tamil Nadu Government.

The boy, an alumnus of SSM Institute of Textile Technology and Polytechnic College, Komarapalayam, replaced cobs with cones in weft in traditional looms to increase weaving capacity.

Despite his brilliance and good academic career, he was struggling to pursue higher education for want of financial support.

The Tamil Nadu Government, after taking into consideration his plight, issued a special Government Order, which reads, ‘since providing higher technical education to the boy will lead to more innovations from him’ the PSG Institute of Technology, Coimbatore, shall admit him in the B.Tech Textile Technology programme under the lateral entry scheme.

The boy will pursue his second year in the college.
