A release said the Minister told the students that the DMK-led Government was distributing textbooks, uniforms, bus pass – all free of cost – and also five eggs a week since it assumed office four-and-half years ago.

He spoke at a function organised to distribute bicycles free of cost to students of three schools.

To improve the standard of education, the Government had split the education department into two and appointed a minister to exclusively look into school education.

New syllabus and activity-based learning had been introduced in the schools and the same was drawing huge appreciation.

The new syllabus and method of teaching had ensured that students did not have to carry huge baggage and that their creativity was tapped.

He then gave away 510 bicycles to students in three schools. R. Venkatachalam, Mayor, Coimbatore Corporation, urged the students to excel in studies. He also recalled the various schemes of the Government.

N. Karthik, Deputy Mayor, V.N. Udayakumar, Opposition party leader, and others participated in the function.
