There was a good response from school students for the inter-school paining and essay competitions conducted by the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism of the Christian Medical College here on Saturday in connection with the observance of the Diabetes Month.
Braving the rains, about 120 students studying in standards 9 to 12 from 31 schools in Vellore participated. According to Nihal Thomas, Professor and Head, Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, CMC, the objective of the competitions was to increase and improve awareness of students on non-communicable diseases and diabetes on the occasion of Diabetes Month. The CMC commenced the Diabetes Month with a cookery competition in October. ‘Diabetes, a global threat' and ‘changing the future of diabetes' were the themes for the painting competition. ‘Describe the day of an individual wanting to prevent or reverse diabetes' and ‘what would you do as an individual, society and government to prevent diabetes?' were the topics for the essay competition.
Alice Augustine, Professor of Nursing of CMC, Rekha Pai, Professor of Molecular and Tumour Pathology, who acted as the judges for the competition gave away the prizes to the following winners:
Painting: I prize: Dhanaseker (Voorhees Higher Secondary School); II prize: Mrithula (St. Mary's Girls Higher Secondary School); III prize: Angelina Sharon (Ida Scudder School).
Following are the winners of the teachers' quiz conducted as part of Diabetes Month:
I prize: Shanta Sharma and Ananda Lekshmi (Shrishti School); II prize: Pragash and Chitra (St. John's School); III prize: Bala Kumar and Syed Suheil (Government Muslim Higher Secondary School). A public camp for screening in diabetes would be held at Cobb Hall in Voorhees College here at 9 a.m. on November 8 and a Caregivers' Quiz at Norman Auditorium, CMC Hospital campus on November 10. A cycling rally would be flagged off by the Chief Educational Officer from Ida Scudder School to Don Bosco School at 4 p.m. on November 11. An exhibition and poster competition would be held at the CMC Hospital car park area adjacent to Hotel Susil at 9 a.m. on November 14, and a music and dance competition at Hotel Darling Residency from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on December 10.
