The Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve Trust (GOMBRT), a special purpose vehicle set up for the conservation of biodiversity in the region, which remained passive for nearly 10 months for want of funds, is back in action as the State government has sanctioned funds and appointed Amit Asthana as its full-time director. 

The GOMBRT, which was established on July 25, 2002 and functioning till last year with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) funding, hit a roadblock this year as the State did not release funds after taking it over on January 1.
