Nagpur: University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Sukhdeo Thorat on Monday asked the students protesting againstreservation to give up their agitation.

"Higher caste students should not forget that students from backward and other backward communities were denied the right to education in the earlier days and now as part of the social system, efforts are being made to restore them those rights," Mr. Thorat said delivering the convocation address at Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University.

Mr. Thorat, who hails from the Vidarbha region, said the present generation of higher caste students were not responsible for the mistakes of their forefathers but had been beneficiaries of the caste system.

"Let the new generation of backward and other backward students avail themselves of the opportunities of higher education," he said and appealed to the agitating students to give up their protests.

Mr. Thorat said the UGC had identified nine universities and 97 colleges with potential for excellence but they constituted only six per cent of total universities and two per cent of colleges. PTI
