‘Rs.50,000 for those who lost their cattle to foot-and -mouth disease’
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam demanded that an immediate compensation of Rs. 50,000 be disbursed to cattle owners who lost their catlle to the foot-and -mouth disease in the district recently.
In a statement issued here on Friday, Mr. T. Senguttuvan, Veppanahalli, MLA and district secretary of DMK said that many milch cows died due to the failure of animal husbandry department to create awareness among the farmers to vaccinate their cattle once in three months. .
The department’s failure to prevent the disease resulted in the loss of over 1000 cows in the last one month.
He said that milch cows infected with the disease died in large numbers in Thally, Hosur, Shoolagiri, Uthanapalli and Kaveripattinam. This affected the livelihood of the farmers.
The previous DMK government used to conduct special medical camps for cattle once in three months regularly to prevent the spread of diseases through ‘varumun kaappom’ scheme.
Due to the death of milch cows in large numbers, the procurement of milk by Aavin reduced by 50,000 litres a day. Moreover, the government failed to create awareness and educate the farmers about the importance of livestock insurance, Mr. Senguttuvan added.
