: The St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai, won the first place in volleyball in the district-level women’s tournament held at Anna Stadium, Palayamkottai on Tuesday.

As all players of this team are from very poor background, they are being moulded by Nellai Friends Volleyball Academy, which conducted south India volleyball tournament here recently.

“Some of these players are orphans and hence we take extreme care in moulding these children into outstanding school-level players. With the assistance of a few sponsors and the cooperation of the administration of the school, they are undergoing rigorous training everyday. Our goal is to shape them into State-level players, at least. As these girls are very much determined and have the ‘never give-up attitude, they fight till the end of the game” says Bhaskar, who coaches the students. When these girls took on stronger team of St. Ignatius Convent HSS, their resolve came to the fore.

Though they lost a set, the frail-looking girls’ determination took the match to the ‘decider’ that went in favour of the St. Joseph’s team.
