Even as the International Year of the Girl Child was observed on October 11 across the world to recognise the girls’ rights and the unique challenges they face, students of the Modakurichi Panchayat Union Middle School took out a rally at Nadhagoundampalayam to create awareness on the predicament faced by the female gender in India.

According to the organisers of the rally, though several initiatives have been taken for the uplift of girl child and women, much more needs to be done for achieving gender parity. They distributed pamphlets to the rural public emphasising the importance of education.

The statistics they provided stated that 66 million girl children are unable to go to schools and that 150 million girl children face sexual abuse every year. Maternity mortality rate was high in instances where girls are forced into marriage between 15 and 19 years, they explained to the villagers.
