CHENNAI: A man posing as a police Sub-Inspector abducted a college student and allegedly molested her in Kovalam on East Coast Road on Tuesday.

Police said the victim who did not return home till late on Monday was reported missing by her father at the Flower Bazaar police station. Investigations revealed that the girl, along with her friend, was forced into an autorickshaw by a youth who claimed to be a Crime Branch Sub-Inspector.

A youth who was with the girls was roughed up and asked to leave.

After dropping the victim’s friend at Egmore, the suspect, who was joined by two others, took her to a hotel in Kovalam where the offence took place, police added.

Joint Commissioner of Police Abhay Kumar Singh formed a special team to trace the girl.

Though the tower location of her mobile phone was found to be at Kelambakkam, she did not attend incoming calls.

“We have traced the girl. One of the suspects who has been identified as Mansoor has been picked up. Fake police identity cards were recovered from him. The victim is being referred for medical examination,” a senior police official added.
