COIMBATORE: The Tea Board is planning to register the Nilgiris High Grown and Assam Orthodox teas as Geographical Indicators (GI) by the year end, said Basudeb Banerjee, Chairman, said here on Friday.
At the annual general meeting of the Tea Trade Association of Coimbatore, he said the registration would enable producers to get a premium price and also prevent the misuse of teas. It would also enable the Government to take legal action on any infringement, he added.
In India, Darjeeling tea was already registered as a Geographical Indicator. The GI Registry in India was in Chennai.
