The ENT (ear, nose and throat) department at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital attached to the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College has acquired a high-tech ENT operating microscope for performing advanced surgeries. The ENT operating microscope was installed on Thursday, according to A.Karthikeyan, dean of the medical college.

The operating microscope manufactured by Zeiss, a German company, has an inbuilt camera and costs Rs.14 lakh.

Only private hospitals in Tamil Nadu possess the instrument, Dr. Karthikeyan told The Hindu .

The equipment was purchased from claims for procedures performed under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Insurance Scheme. The norms of the scheme state that claims are split among patients welfare, materials for surgery and incentives for operating team. But 25 per cent of proceeds are to be made use of for upgrade of infrastructure and facilities in the hospital.

Clarity of vision

As the hi-tech operating microscope has an inbuilt camera, clarity of vision for procedures involving the ear is much enhanced, said S. Palaniappan, head, department of ENT.

The equipment will make procedures requiring precision feasible and reduce surgical error, he added. Cochlear implants and skull-based surgeries would benefit from the new equipment.

With the medical college hospital keen on getting approval to start postgraduate programme in ENT, such equipment comes as a bonus for a teaching hospital, said Dr. Palaniappan.
