MADURAI: Conditions of poverty did not deter this young girl from achieving what could be seen as a phenomenal feat. S. Parameswari of Avvai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School holds the State rank in Geography. In a subject that requires a good amount of memory power, Parameswari was able to score 197 out of 200 and now she is entitled to a State Government scholarship which will take care of her higher studies.

It was double delight for Madurai as S. Jayapriya of Madurai Aruppukottai Nadar Uravinmurai Girls Higher Secondary School also scored 197; but on the aggregate Parameswari edged her out to become the State topper.

Hailing from Varichiyur, a small village which is located on the way to Sivaganga near Madurai, she is fourth among her siblings. Her father M. Sekar is a farmhand and her mother S.Malliga too pitches in with the odd work at the fields to support the family. Parameswari's objective is to become an IPS officer and contribute to the society. She thanked her teachers and parents who gave her good support.

Geography remains a subject that holds great importance in these times of climate change, globalised economy and geopolitical conditions. Parameswari was extremely happy about her achievement in her favourite subject and said that she will choose the same for her civil services examination.

A jubilant T. Umamaheshwari, her Geography teacher, said that “we missed a State rank last time when one of our students scored 189, but this time we achieved it.” Talking about special efforts, she said that “we concentrated on the presentation skills of the students, map questions and most importantly the objective type questions.”

K.Sowmini, Headmistress, said. “We, in our school, have been producing talent by making below average students perform better and there have been better changes. For Plus Two students we conduct special classes from 10 a.m. to 3.p.m. concentrating majorly on enhancing the presentation skills.”

Avvai School has already produced a State topper in geography with 196 marks securing first rank in the year 2004 and missed one by a whisker last time.
