There have been several similar fatal accidents involving utility vehicles
CHENNAI: A Chennai Corporation official was killed on the spot when a garbage van ran over him near the Kodambakkam bridge here on Monday.
Police said Ezhumalai (58) of Ekattuthangal, working as a conservancy supervisor in the Saidapet Zone, and his wife Sivagami (54) were going to a shop on a two-wheeler when a speeding garbage van knocked them down. Though the victim was wearing a helmet, he suffered a serious head injury and died. Sivagami escaped with minor injuries.
The Pondy Bazaar traffic investigation police have arrested the van driver, Ramesh (20) of Maduravoyal.
The van belongs to Neel Metal Fanalca, private firm that clears solid waste in four zones in the city.
There have been several other fatal accidents involving garbage collection trucks or Chennai Corporation’s utility vehicles in the past five months.
On October 25, a Corporation mini-lorry ran over a 50-year-old cyclist and fatally knocked down a 63-year-old woman riding pillion on a two-wheeler in Royapettah.
In July, a 27-year-old woman was killed when a Corporation garbage collection truck ran over her at Model School Road in the Thousand Lights area.
The victim, J. Agnes, was walking to her office when a Corporation employee, in the absence of the truck driver, decided to move the vehicle to a less busy spot.
The employee was dismissed later.
In the same month, a streetlight repair van driver took a wrong lane and ran over two-wheeler rider K. Vageesan, a two-wheeler rider in Triplicane.
