Police have launched a massive man hunt to nab a gang that posed as Income Tax Department officials, intercepted a bus and took away 7.2 kg of gold jewellery from two people who were transporting the consignment from Coimbatore to Tiruvarur at Lalapet in Karur district early on Monday.

Sources said Dwarakanath (45) and his employer Nagaraj (50) both belonging to Coimbatore were carrying gold jewellery weighing 7.2 kg from a wholesale jeweller based in Coimbatore to a couple of jewellers in Tiruvarur in a private omni bus. While the bus nearing Lalapet, a gang of six people who came in an SUV intercepted and forced them into the bus.

Claiming that they have received information on illegal transportation of huge cash, they began to search every passenger. When they searched the belonging of two people from Coimbatore and found that they contained jewellery they whisked away the duo and dropped them off near Yemur..
