Police say the victim, Ravi, was the leader of a gang involved in murder cases

A notorious criminal, who was allegedly involved in a number of murder cases, was hacked to death by a gang of unidentified persons here on Thursday night. Rivalry between two gangs was said be the reason for the murder.

Police sources Ravi alias Steel Ravi (45), a resident of Erode, along with a few persons was proceeding to Ayira Vysya Thirumana Mandapam to participate in an auction when the unidentified gang blocked their way.

When Ravi attempted to escape from them, members of the gang chased Ravi and hacked him with weapons. He died on the spot. Another person, who was accompanying Ravi, received injuries and was admitted to Erode government hospital.

Police sources said Ravi was the leader of a gang which was involved in a number of cases including the recent murder of the owner of a private financial firm and a member of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Karthick Sattanathan, in Surampatty.

Ravi along with a few others was arrested for their alleged involvement in the killing of Karthick and lodged in the Central Prison in Coimbatore. He was released from the prison a few weeks ago.

Erode town police registered a case in this connection and further investigation is going on.
