The police are on the look out for impostors who had duped an elderly couple in Doraiswamy Nagar, DSP Nagar here.

They said that Vincent Rayappan had lodged a complaint with the local Tamil Nadu Electricity Board office that the meter box at his house needed a check as he experienced “abnormal” rise in the number of units. Though there was no response, some persons posing as linemen gained entry into the house a couple of days back. “They went on stating that we had consumed more units, but paid little…Hence, to settle the issue, the couple were asked to part with money. Even after explaining that they had not used so much electricity, the ‘staff' insisted and took away Rs. 27,000 cash from them.”

The ‘staff' promised to issue a receipt and asked the couple to come and collect it from the office.

Thinking that the faulty meter had been rectified, Mr. Rayappan asked his son to go to the office and collect the receipt. The officials pleaded ignorance. Hence, the couple approached the S.S. Colony police and lodged a complaint.

The resident also realised that a four-and-half-sovereign gold jewels were missing.
