NAGAPATTINAM: As many as 6,023 rural households will be provided free electricity under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electricity Infrastructure and Household Electrification Scheme) in Nagapattinam district, said M. Jayaraman, Collector, on Friday.

Launching free electricity to rural households at Agarakadambanur village in Kilvelur taluk by providing power connection to 31 houses, the Collector said that the aim of the scheme was to provide free power supply to all the houses of people belonging to below poverty line.

He pointed out that there were 2,540 very small villages in the district and people living in two lakh huts in the district.

He said that the scheme would be implemented in 18 months.

Mr. Jayaraman said that rural electricity infrastructure would be improved further in view of the various development works being carried out for rural electricity.

He pointed out that as many as 169 new transformers would be installed in the rural areas in the district besides extending the high tension and domestic power lines for a length of more than 300 km.
