Free spectacles given to school children

MADURAI: `Kannoli vazhangum vizha' and a free eye screening camp were organised at Jaihindpuram here on Saturday to mark the 83rd birthday of the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi.

Presiding over the function, the District Collector, T. Udhayachandran, said the patients, after screening, would be admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital for cataract surgery.

Intraocular lens would be fitted and spectacles distributed according to the needs of the patients.

The Collector, who asked the people to avail themselves of the benefits in the camp, also distributed free spectacles to school children on the occasion.

A team of 11 doctors led by R. Unnamalai, Chief Ophthalmic Surgeon, Government Rajaji Hospital, conducted the camp. Similar camps were held at Othakadai, Palamedu, Avaniapuram and Samayanallur.

V.K. Samilal, Dean, Government Rajaji Hospital, S. Shanmugasundaram, Deputy Director of Health Services, and R. Vijayal, Joint Director, Health Services, Usilampatti, spoke. The camp was jointly organised by the District Blindness Control Society and Peace Welfare Association.
