TAMBARAM: The Adambakkam police have arrested four youths on charges of stealing a credit card and misusing it to purchase jewellery, valuables and a motorcycle.

Pradeep Kumar, an employee of a courier firm, and three of his friends were arrested soon after the complaint was lodged at the Adambakkam police station on Sunday. Giving details, police said Lakshmi Devi, a Chennai resident, had applied to a leading private bank for a credit card some weeks ago. Though she did not receive the card, she received a communication from the bank stating she had made purchases at a jewellery showroom worth Rs.1.65 lakh. She clarified to the bank authorities that she was yet to get the card. Bank authorities contacted their courier agency on Pazhandiamman Koil Street in Adambakkam, who confirmed they received the card from the bank but had not dispatched it to the client and hence, lodged a complaint on Sunday.

The police commenced investigations and found that the card was first used in a petrol filling station and then at a leading jeweller on North Usman Road in T.Nagar, from where a group of youths had bought the jewellery worth Rs.1.65 lakh. Investigations established that Pradeep Kumar, an employee at the courier firm’s office, stole the card on October 24 and given it to his three friends Rizwan Ahmed, Mohammed Nishat and Bashit Ahmed. After buying the jewellery, they pledged them with a pawn broker in Palavakkam on East Coast Road and got Rs.97,000 in cash. They bought a motorcycle and are reported to have spent the rest of the sum. The youths confessed to the crime, police said.

The youths were remanded to judicial custody.
