They used abusive language and pushed her down
Senthamangalam police arrested four teenagers for allegedly harassing a pregnant woman and pushing her down, due to which she suffered minor injuries.
The 26-year-old victim of Siviyampalayam who is working in a weaving unit was admitted to and is getting treated in the Senthamangalam Government Hospital.
Police sources here said that the incident happened on Tuesday evening when the woman who was into her fifth month of pregnancy was returning home on foot after work, on a narrow footpath – between Retchiyampalayam to Siviyampalayam – along with another person of her village.
The four boys came on a moped, blocked her way and harassed her.
“The victim claimed that the persons used abusive language and made intolerable remarks before physically assaulting her and pushing her down.
"She suffered minor injuries during the attack. She was in a state of shock after she was harassed by boys who indulged in this cruel act even after knowing that she was pregnant. She is steadily improving physically and mentally,” police added.
Namakkal DSP P. Annamalai told The Hindu that the accused were booked under sections 341 (wrongful restraint) and 323 (causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women Harassment Act.
Investigations revealed that all the four were students. “Two of them are studying in an ITI. One of them is awaiting results for the Plus Two Board Examination while the other will be in Plus Two next year,” police said.
Police said that the moped that was claimed to have been used by them for the crime was seized.
After their arrest on Wednesday, they were produced before the Namakkal Judicial Magistrate during the late hours of the day, remanded in custody and lodged in Salem Juvenile Prison.
