The Excise Department has seized 3,840 bottles of spurious liquor and took possession of the van that was used to transport the liquor to Tamil Nadu.
The estimated value of the goods seized is Rs. 4 lakh.
Following a tip off on Thursday morning, Excise Department officials went to Mettupalayam truck terminal, where three persons were found attempting to load illicit liquor into the van.
As soon as they saw the officials, they ran, but the officials managed to catch one of them — Balamurugan from Panruti, Excise Commissioner R. Anbalagan told The Hindu .
Following investigation, they found that one of the persons involved in the case was Kavi alias Kaviarasu, who is a habitual offender. So far, he has four cases booked against him and is out on bail on all four. The third person involved was the driver, he said. There were 80 cases of liquor recovered with fake labels revealing them to be of the “Captain” and the “Day and Night” brands.
Cases have been booked against all the three men under section 30 of the Excise Act for manufacturing spurious liquor, he said.
