Two engineering students were killed on the spot after they were run over by a truck near Mallur on Saturday night.

Kabilan (22), of Maamangam near Salem, and K. Jagadeswaran, aged 22 from Vinayakapuram near Attur, were killed on the spot. Their friend, V. Balakrishnan (22) of Kichipalayam, who had travelled with them, suffered minor injuries. He was admitted in the Salem Government Hospital.Mallur Police has registered a case and is investigating. “The victims are first year engineering students of a college in Rasipuram Taluk. They were returning from the college after enquiring about their certificate”, the Police said and added that they were riding a two-wheeler and were on the way to Salem from Pachal (Namakkal) on the National Highway-7.

“Balakrishnan was riding the bike while the two other friends were seated as pillion riders.

He was riding the bike on the left side of the road. It is learnt that Balakrishnan lost control of the vehicle after he accidentally ran over a dog that suddenly crossed the highway at Santhiyur Junction near Mallur”, the Police said.

. “The three fell off the bike. While Balakrishnan landed on the left side of the vehicle and escaped with injuries, Kabilan and Jagadeswaran landed on the right side of the vehicle, on the middle of the road.

A truck that came behind them, ran over the two students, leaving them dead on the spot”, the police added. Police have arrested the truck driver V. Sampath Kumar (34) of Vaniyambadi, Vellore district.

Two wheeler collide

Two persons were killed in an accident when the two-wheeler they were travelling collided with a four wheeler in Kakaveri village, Rasipuram Taluk in Nammakal on Saturday night.

Namagiripettai Police, who have registered a case said that P. Kulanthaivel (35) of Pattinam village was riding a moped and B. Ranjith alias Ranjith Kumar (22) of the same village, Prabakaran and Murugesan were seated as the pillion riders.

“They were on their way to Namagiripettai from Rasipuram. The bike collided with the four-wheeler, near Thiruvalluvar Textile Mill.

Kulanthaivel and Ranjith — who was seated next to the driver — were killed on the spot. The two others escaped with minor injuries and were admitted in a private hospital in Rasipuram and were under going treatment.

The driver of the four-wheeler abandoned the vehicle and fled. The Police seized the vehicle and it was taken to the Namagiripettai Police Station.

The police said that search is on for the driver who is reportedly absconding.
