Four persons were killed and 12 others sustained injuries in an accident involving a bus and a tipper lorry on Grand Southern Trunk Road near Maraimalai Nagar on Tuesday.
Traffic on the arterial road was disrupted for about an hour.
According to police, the accident took place around 6 p.m., when the ill-fated bus – T60 Limited Stop Service operated by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Villupuram Division (Kancheepuram Unit), between Chengalpattu and Tambaram – was nearing Maraimalai Nagar. The tipper lorry, which was proceeding towards Chengalpattu, on the other side of the carriageway jumped over the road divider and hit the LSS service in front of the car manufacturing plant on the outskirts of Maraimalai Nagar.
Three male passengers were crushed to death and the lorry driver died on the spot. Twelve commuters, including an infant and an 8-year-old girl and 5 men sustained injuries. Ambulances were rushed to the spot and injured were shifted to the Chengalpattu Medical College hospital, Chengalpattu.
