At Aranthangi municipal council meeting

ARANTHANGI: Four councillors were injured when members belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Congress on one hand, and independents and Bharathiya Janatha Party members on the other clashed at the Aranthangi municipal council meeting held here on Wednesday.

It all started when an independent, Subramanian, levelled certain allegations against the Aranthangi (DMK) MLA, Udhayam Shanmugam, about "non-allocation of funds to the constituency, including the municipal wards."

A cross section of the DMK councillors condemned the remarks.

The Chairman, Mariappan, intervened to clarify that the council meeting should not be used as a forum to criticise the MLA.

A `war of words' between the two groups of councillors ensued, resulting in a pandemonium.

Chair hurled

When one of the councillors hurled a chair, Muthulatha (DMK) and the vice-chairman, Kutch Mohamed (Congress), were injured.

Later, they were admitted at the Government Hospital here.

Two councillors, Sumathy and G. M. Rajendran, were treated as outpatients.

The Aranthangi police have registered cases based on complaints filed by Muthulatha and Muralidaran (BJP).

Mr. Udhayam Shanmugam visited the injured.
