Coimbatore: The Sugarcane Breeding Institute celebrated its Foundation Day and presented the Sir T.S. Venkataraman Awards for research.

R. Viswanathan, Senior Scientist (Plant Pathology) of the institute got the award for his work on molecular pathology. M. Praneetha of the University of Florida in the United States was also given the award for her research on cytomorphological and molecular aspects of wild sugarcane.

Giving away the awards, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam Vice-Chancellor P. Venkat Rangan called upon scientists to remain focussed on achieving their goals. Director of the institute N. Vijayan Nair pointed out that it was one of the oldest agricultural research institutions in the country and that it would celebrates its centenary in four years.

The sugarcane varieties developed by the institute were cultivated all over the country and also in other Asian and African countries.
