MADURAI: Formation of a rubber cluster here that will showcase the potential of the region to investors was mooted at ‘Madurai Rubber 2010,' an event organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), on Friday.
The chairman of Madurai zone, Bharath K. S., who inaugurated the event, welcomed the idea, which, he said, would even impress big ticket investors. Madurai, he said, had a rich tradition in rubber industry and the units located here recorded a turnover of Rs. 2000 crore. A rubber cluster could naturally be formed to showcase south Tamil Nadu as a destination for auto components. Technical excellence should be sustained by the local rubber industry in order to remain competitive, he said.
P. Seetharaman, vice-president, Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association, mooted the idea of creating a research and development facility for the rubber industry in association with the CII. The Plastic Manufacturers' Association of Madurai was involved in the process of creating a tool room in the Kappalur industrial estate. The MADITSSIA was working on creation of an incubator for food processing industry at the K. Pudur industrial estate, he said.
B. T. Bangera, Managing Director, Hi-Tech Arai, who introduced the theme of the meet, wanted the rubber industry to keep on updating technology in an era of “zero defect.” Ligi George, Managing Director, Madras Suspensions, welcomed the gathering and V. Krishnamurthy, past chairman, proposed a vote of thanks.
