Two forest guards received injuries when two unidentified persons assaulted them with a country-made gun in Anthiyur forest range in Erode district on Friday night. The persons left two tusks, a gun and bullets while fleeing.

Sources said a team of personnel led by Forester Dhanasekaran went to Mamarathu Maduvu area of Anthiyur jungle to put out the forest fire. The team found two persons roaming under suspicious circumstances with a country-made gun and attempted to catch them.

One of the two persons fired a shot at the personnel. The bullet, however, missed the personnel narrowly. Forest guards Senthilkumar and Siddhan attempted to get hold of the duo.

The two beat the forest guards with the gun before fleeing the spot.

The duo dropped the gun and a bag while fleeing.

Forest personnel found two tusks and bullets in the bag.

The injured were admitted to Anthiyur government hospital. Police registered a case and further investigation was going on.

Forest officials said they launched a detailed investigation to nab the persons. “It appears that the duo were poachers,” an official said.
