SALEM: A 14-year-old girl from Aragalur near Talavasal ran away from her parents to seek asylum in Salem Collectorate here on Wednesday.

The girl alleged that her father, a daily wager, was forcing her to marry a truck driver though she wanted to continue her studies.

The girl studying in ninth standard in the Aragalur Government High School, told ‘The Hindu’ that her proposed groom was a 32-year-old truck driver from her neighbourhood, who had promised her father that he would marry her without any dowry. Since she had two younger sisters, her father had settled for the deal with no second thought.

Her family, including her mother, had opposed it.

When her father insisted three days ago that he would go ahead with the marriage proposal, her grandfather lodged a complaint with the Talavasal police, which issued a severe warning to her father. “Despite that, he went ahead with his plan and fixed the marriage,” the girl said.

With her mother’s help, the girl slipped out of her house at night and came to Salem all alone on Wednesday to narrate her plight to the senior officials of the Collectorate.

They referred the case to the women police at Talavasal.
