A local folk artiste was murdered by a fellow artiste outside the victim’s house at Panayadi Kuthagai in Katripulam village near Vedaranyam on Saturday night. Enmity was suspected to the motive for the murder.

Sellakannu, 40, a Tavil artiste, was fatally attacked allegedly by Anbazhagan (45) and four others. The victim’s wife Selvi and nephew Shanmugam were injured in the scuffle and have been admitted to the Vedaranyam GH .

Speaking to The Hindu , a local requesting anonymity, said the husband of Katripulam Panchayat president, who was a friend of the accused, had persuaded the victim not to file a complaint with the police and sort it out amicably. Both the victim and the accused are Dalits.

Chaos prevailed at the Vedaranyam GH on Sunday after the police refused to register cases against the sons-in-law of the accused, who was allegedly involved in the attack.

Family members of the victim staged protest at the hospital after the Katripulam police refused to register a case against the accused.

The Superintendent of Police could not be reached for his comments.
