Focus on rehabilitation of the physically challenged

Tuticorin: The ruling Darvida Munnetra Kazhagam government led by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was implementing a series of welfare measures through various schemes, said Social Welfare Minister P. Geetha Jeevan.

At a programme organised at V.O. Chidambaram College by the District Rehabilitation Centre on the occasion of World Disabled Day on Friday, the Minister said that novel schemes were being implemented on a daily basis to suit the needs of the people. More funds had been allotted for the rehabilitation of the disabled people.

A sum of Rs. 12.92 lakh was given to 59 beneficiaries with physical disabilities. Besides, motorised three-wheelers were given to five others. Forty motorised three-wheelers had been allotted for the district. A sum of Rs. 30, 000 was given towards procuring equipment for setting up kiosks.

Through the District Rehabilitation Centre, financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 39.24 lakh had been given to 10,277 beneficiaries in the district since 2006. Besides, a sum of Rs. 1,70,500 was given to 36 beneficiaries through the welfare board of the physically handicapped, Ms. Jeevan said.

Collector G. Prakash, who presided over the meeting, highlighted the schemes meant for the physically challenged.

Rev. Fr. Devarajan, founder of Helen Flaghrity Rehabilitation Centre for the Physically Handicapped, who received a national award for ‘best individual service for the disabled' on December 3 last year, was honoured. P. Manohar, District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer, was present.
