ERODE: The construction of a new flyover in Panneerselvam Park here would not cause any damage to the Periya Mariamman temple.

Collector R. , in a statement, said that the flyover was constructed to ease the traffic congestion in Panneerselvam Park and to enhance the traffic safety in Erode town.

Dismissing rumours about the project, the Collector clarified that the highways department was having no plans to demolish a portion of the temple for this flyover project.

The department was having adequate space to construct the flyover.

The width of the existing road near the temple was 17.5 metres. Of which, the highways department was going to take only 13.2 metres for the flyover project.

A section of the media had carried wrong reports which claimed that a portion of the temple would be taken for the construction.

Mr. Sudalaikannan said that stern action would be initiated against those who were spreading rumours about the flyover project. He appealed to the people to co-operate with the district administration for the effective implementation of the project.

The construction of the flyover would fuel the growth of the Erode district and people should extended their support for the development programmes, he said.

Alternative traffic arrangements had been made in the town, he added.
