PONDICHERRY: The mobile switching centre based fixed wireless telephone exchange has been commissioned at Pondicherry on Saturday.
The exchange has a capacity to operate one lakh WLL connections in telecom districts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
The Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, inaugurated the exchange.
The exchange, installed at a cost of Rs. 6.8 crore, would cater to telecom districts of Pondicherry, Cuddalore, Chengalpet, Vellore, Erode, Salem, Coimbatore and Dharmapuri.
With the commissioning of the exchange, more than 95 per cent of waiting list on landlines would be cleared immediately.
BSNL has already installed 142 towers to give connections in the eight-telecom districts.
In his inaugural address, the Minister promised to set up an IT park in Pondicherry. "If the State government allots 25 acres of land an IT park would be set here", he said responding to a request made by the local MP Ramadass.
The Minister said in the last 18 months the confidence among foreign investors has increased and many foreign companies are lining up to invest in infrastructure development.
