The city police on Friday arrested a four-member gang and a broker who were in the habit of stealing jewels from wedding halls and selling them in the bullion market.

The gang, comprising L. Govindan (63) of Kamarajapuram; M. Kannan (32) of CMR Road; R. Mohan (54) of Mathichiyam and R. Rangan (52) of Chinthamani Road, was arrested on South Avanimoola Street, along with M. Vellaiyan (35) of Nilaiyur, who was buying stolen jewels from it. A special team also recovered 12 sovereigns of gold bars and 48 diamond stones from them. Complaints were lodged on June 7 and November 21 last year in Tallakulam police station about the theft of gold and diamond jewels, mobile phones, camera and Rs. 64, 500. The police have launched a hunt for Ravi of Chinna Kanmai and R. Rangaraj of Ponnagaram.
