Five men were arrested while gambling at Adhalikulam, Srivaikuntam taluk on Tuesday night. The Srivaikuntam police busted the gambling racket and recovered Rs. 1,88, 200 cash from them. Two cars and two-wheelers were seized from them. Six mobile phones, which had been reportedly used by them, were recovered. Based on a tip-off, the gamblers were trapped.

A team led by N. Stephen Jesubatham, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Srivaikuntam, carried out the operation. Their accomplices gave a slip. Police have been conducting raids at frequent intervals to curb such activities. Vigilance would be stepped up further to clampdown on gambling, Mr. Jesubatham said. On July 14, 18 gamblers were held and cash of Rs. 5.32 lakh was recovered from them after the police busted their hideout at Eral, Mr. Jesubatham informed.

Investigations into the racket revealed that the accomplices absconding were D. Sudalaimuthu of Sathankulam, A. Kaja, Palayamkottai, and M. Soosai of the same locality. The arrested were K. Sheik Mohammed (38) of Sathankulam, E. Chithirai (46) of Vellore village near Srivaikuntam, D. Dhanaraj (26) of Palayamkottai, J. Mohan (47) of Melapalayam and C. Nallakannu (44) of Vellore village. The arrests were made under Section – 12 of Tamil Nadu Gaming Act.
