VELLORE: Five persons, who were involved in a series of chain-snatching incidents and robberies, in which cash, gold jewels and other valuables were robbed from motorcyclists and pedestrians in and around Vellore, Katpadi, Ranipet and Thimiri in the last four months were arrested by a special party led by S. Pattabhi, Katpadi Deputy Superindent of Police, on Wednesday. Mr. Pattabhi along with his team intercepted two motorcycles proceeding towards Thiruvalam, when they were engaged in vehicle check near the E.B. Junction Road early on Wednesday and arrested G. Harikumar alias Hari (24) and M. Suresh (26) of Arcot, B. Senthilkumar (20) of Karai, Ranipet and their accomplices R. Bhoominathan (20) and M. Pandiyan (20) of Arcot.

On interrogation, the arrested confessed to having waylaid motorcyclists and snatched gold jewels weighing 17 sovereigns, a watch and cash to the tune of Rs.26,150 in seven places in the last four months.

The police party seized two motorcycles used for robbery and 15 sovereigns of the stolen jewels, Rs.1.50 lakhs in all from the accused. They were remanded to judicial custody.
