The city police had arrested employers of five child workers who were rescued from four textile units situated in the heart of Tirupur knitwear cluster on Wednesday night.

The arrested were M. Rangasamy (52), M. Ramasubbu (34), P. Mohanraj (35) and C. Ravi (30).

The rescue operations were carried out by Bachpan Bachao Andolan volunteers and anti-human trafficking unit of the city police.

Inspector E. Nirmala of Anti-Human Trafficking Unit told The Hindu that cases were registered against the employers of the children under Section 26 of Juvenile Justice Act, 2000, and a few sections under Indian Penal Code.

Of the children rescued, one was from Jammu and Kashmir, another from Bihar and the remaining from various places within Tamil Nadu.

Fancy Anitha, district coordinator of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, told reporters that the child workers were found at the units in Golden Nagar, Pappanaickenpalayam and V.O.C.Nagar areas in the city.

“One of the children rescued, the boy from Bihar, has been saved from labour on an earlier occasion. He was enrolled into a school only to go to work again,” Ms. Anitha added. All the children were put at a children’s home.
