Police arrested five persons, including the groom, for getting him married to a 14-year-old girl of Therthampalayam near Mohanur on Thursday.

Police said that the girl’s parents forced her to discontinue Class 10 and got her married to 32-year-old Rajendran of Velalapatti Colony near Thamampatti in Salem at Veeramachi Amman Temple in Chinnathambipalayam near Mohanur.

“ The groom Rajendran and his father Ganesan, girl’s father Perumal and two others – Kumar and Annadurai – who helped them perform the marriage were arrested,” Superintendent of Police P. Kannammal said.

They were produced before the Namakkal Judicial Magistrate-II and sent to remand for 15 days in the Namakkal Sub Jail. The girl was left in the custody of her mother.

Meanwhile, the Anti Trafficking Police, Childline 1098 and officials from the revenue department stopped two child marriages that were to be performed on Friday.

Marriage stopped

Director of Childline 1098 in Namakkal S.L. Sathiya Nesan said that the marriage of a 15-year-old girl of S.K. Pudur, near Manapalli, with a 21-year-old man on Friday was stopped. The girl, studying Class X in a government school, was produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and admitted in a home.

The other was the marriage of a 17-year-old girl of Chandrasekarapuram near Rasipuram with a 24-year-old man that was scheduled to be conducted at Venanthur on Friday.

“We got a statement from the parents of the boy and girl and stopped the marriage. She will be produced before the CWC on Friday”, he added.
