: Representatives of fishermen associations here have urged the Government to name Manakudi bridge as Lourdammal Simon bridge, the first woman minister from the district (who dedicated herself to welfare of fishermen).
In the fishermen grievance day meeting here on Friday, they alleged that welfare schemes meant for them were inaccessible to them.
Moreover, they told that the Collector that in the coastal areas of the district, the doctors appointed to Primary Health Centres were not regular in their duties.
Hence, steps should be taken to ensure their presence in PHCs.
“If a doctor is not available, the patients should be told of his or her absence so that they need not wait for the doctor endlessly without any clue”
They also demanded the district administration to operate three transport corporation buses from Manakudi to Neerodi so that fishermen could sell their catch for a better price.
They also demanded the district administration to operate one more bus in this route for their benefit.
Necessary steps would be taken to ensure Green House Scheme in the district, the officials said.
The Collector Rajendra Ratnoo, the Revenue Divisional officer, Prabhakaran, the Assistant Director of Fisheries, Rubert Jothi, and other officials participated.
