Over 300 fishermen of the coastal villages of Thanjavur district struck work on Friday demanding immediate release of fishermen from Thanjavur and Ramanathapuram arrested by Sri Lankan Navy personnel.

A.Tajudeen, State secretary of the Tamil Nadu Meenavar Peravai, told The Hindu that fishermen from Sethubavachathiram, Mallipattinam, Adhirampattinam in the district did not venture into sea on Friday.

The arrest of innocent fishermen by the Sri Lankan forces had become a perennial problem. There was no point in holding talks among fishermen of the two countries, he said.
