: Seeking the withdrawal of a “false case” filed against a local body representative, a group fisherman from various coastal hamlets in the district submitted a petition to Collector C. Samayamoorthy on Tuesday.
According to S.V. Antony of Uvari, one of the signatories of the petition, one Praveen, a youth from Kooththenkuzhi, who was working in a garnet export unit near his hamlet, died in harness mysteriously on January 11 last. Though company officials claimed that it was an accidental death, relatives of the deceased suspected it to be a murder. Radhapuram Union councillor Bosco from Kooththenkuzhi chaired a meeting in his village and urged the company to give adequate compensation to the family of the victim, besides taking steps altering the case to be registered under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code (murder).
“Against this backdrop, Mr. Bosco’s lorry was detained by Uvari police recently on charges that he damaged a truck of the garnet export unit with his vehicle. Since, he is leading the protests against the garnet export unit, the police filed false case against him and detained his vehicle,” Mr. Antony alleged.
