Fisherfolk have called off their protests following assurances from the State government that the diesel subsidy would be continued for the fisherfolk. Fisherfolk have been on a week-long strike after the diesel hike effected by the Centre led to the State government pulling off the plugs temporarily on the subsidy. Over 43 fishing habitations in Nagapattinam and 11 fishing habitations in Karaikal had been on a strike extending to over a week, claiming that the hike had affected an increase of Rs.11.83 a litre of diesel.
