YERCAUD: A forest fire that broke out in the upper reaches of Yercaud a few days ago remains uncontrolled and has devastated large tracts of forest.
People saw the fire engulf forests near the 19th hairpin bend of the ghat road and other places on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The fire was noticed near the 40-foot bridge on March 22 the Forest Department was informed. Two fire engines were deployed to extinguish it.
Residents and tourists claimed that Forest Department officials had failed to control the fire.
"Due to half-hearted efforts of the officials, the fire has spread to more parts, destroying precious forest wealth."
Thick smoke made it difficult for road-users to drive on the ghat road. The officials had promised to remove dry leaves near the road as part of preventive measures, but were yet to do so.
District Forest Officer R. K. Bharathi said due to manpower shortage, forest fires could not be controlled immediately.
