Take out cycle rally; demonstrate safe methods to students

In a bid to celebrate Deepavali in the safest possible manner, the Fire Service and Rescue Personnel of Tuticorin district took out a cycle rally in various streets of the town and important crowded places here on Wednesday.

As per the directive of Collector C.N. Maheswaran and Director of Fire Services, the rally was scheduled ahead of Deepavali festival to raise awareness of safety for a risk-free celebration, C. Jayaraman, District Fire officer, who led the rally, said.

During the programme, the participants highlighted the safety measures to be adopted while bursting crackers at public places.

Through loud speakers also, the fire brigade spread key information about safety to be adopted by the public.

The participants carried placards carrying instructions of do's and don'ts.

Prior to bursting crackers, people should monitor traffic movement and watch out for pedestrians so that they would not be disturbed. People were also restricted from bursting crackers beyond 10 p.m. to avoid nuisance to public.

Celebrations could commence from 6 a.m. Fireworks should be kept safely at home to avert danger of fire accident.

The team also demonstrated safe methods of bursting crackers and other fire works before the students of St. Mary's College. The students were also provided with essential tips on life saving measures to be applied at times of risk. People bursting crackers were asked to use a lengthy “agarbathi” to light the crackers.

To increase awareness, slides were being shown at cinema theatres and awareness programmes had been televised on local cable television channels, Mr. Jayaraman said.

Similar programmes had been carried out at important places in Tiruchendur and Kovilpatti also, he added.
